This work contains the fundamental discovery of permanental processes as a model for photons made by Prof. Odile Macchi at the beginning of the seventies. It is deeply rooted in Quantum Optics in taking the notion of coincidence as a basic theoretical notion and develops for the ?rst time in a rigorous way a point process theory for the description of bosons and fermions. It is a corner stone which connects Quantum Optics and modern point process theory. The purpose of the additional Scholion, written by Prof. Suren Poghosyan and Prof. Hans Zessin is an exposition of developments in the last four decades. This book provides a unique introduction to the theory of point processes by one of the founding fathers of the subject. It is the translation of a course in French given by Prof. Klaus Krickeberg in the academic year 1976/77 at the Mathematics Department of the Université Paris Sud (Orsay). Several scholia by Prof. Hans Zessin describes shortly certain developments which took place in the last four decades. The text forms an excellent introduction for graduate students and postgraduates. They will gain a broad and deep understanding of the foundations of the theory as well its applications.
